What Is Underwriting?

Underwriting is the process an insurer uses to decide whether to offer you a policy and at what price. The underwriter weighs risk factors — for life insurance, that means age, health, smoking status, and medical history; for home insurance, the roof age, location, and claims record. The outcome sets your premium or, sometimes, a denial.

Why it matters

Underwriting is why two neighbors can pay very different premiums for what looks like identical coverage. It is the insurer’s core risk-selection engine.

Common confusion

Underwriting is not the same as claims handling. Underwriting happens before the policy is issued; claims handling happens after a loss.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will underwriting check my medical records?

For most life and disability policies, yes — the insurer may request a paramed exam or authorization to review records, unless you choose a "no-exam" product with higher premiums.

How long does underwriting take?

Simple auto quotes are instant; fully underwritten life policies can take a few weeks if medical records are needed.
