What Is Adjuster?

An adjuster is the person who investigates an insurance claim and decides how much the insurer will pay. A "staff adjuster" works for the insurer; a "public adjuster" works for you (for a fee) on large or disputed claims. The adjuster inspects damage, reviews documents, and negotiates the settlement within policy terms.

Why it matters

The adjuster’s assessment directly sets your payout, so clear documentation and, for big losses, a public adjuster can matter.

Common confusion

A public adjuster represents you, not the insurer — and is paid from the claim, so weigh the fee against the gain.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I hire a public adjuster?

For large or complex losses (fire, major water) the higher payout can exceed their fee. For small claims it usually is not worth it.

Can I dispute the adjuster’s number?

Yes — supply estimates and documentation, request a re-inspection, or invoke the policy’s appraisal clause if needed.
